Barbara Hershey Set to Return as Cora

Lots of Interesting News Out of "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland"

Barbara Hershey Queen of Hearts oncewonderland.blogspot.com
Barbara Hershey as The Queen of Hearts

Once Upon a Time in Wonderland may be a whole new world for the "Once Upon a Time" universe, but familiar faces will be around throughout the series. Co-creators Adam Horowitz and Ed Kitsis announced at the show's summer Television Critics Association press tour presentation that they intend for Barbara Hershey to reprise her role as the Queen of Hearts/Cora.

Sebastian Stan Mad Hatter oncewonderland.blogspot.com
Sebastian Stan as the Mad Hatter

Adam and Eddy revealed that Cora should appear in flashbacks. Sebastian Stan, though, who plays the Mad Hatter, may or may not show up. Stan is starring in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," so he may be a little tied up right now. However, the co-creators insist that they will never recast Stan, saying, “We’re never going to have a Mad Hatter not played by Sebastian.”

Naveen Andrews oncewonderland.blogspot.com
Naveen Andrews

Other news at the panel was mostly about the premiere, which finishes filming in Vancouver this month (production began in early April). In the second half of the premiere — the first 20 minutes are already filmed — we will see Alice and her friends in Wonderland.

Naveen Andrews Jafar oncewonderland.filminspector.com
Naveen Andrews as Jafar

There, we will meet Jafar ("Lost"’s Naveen Andrews) and see more of the Red Queen. Jafar and the Red Queen form an alliance to keep Alice from reuniting with genie Cyrus!

Barbara Hershey and Naveen Andrews in happier times

One of the more interesting behind-the-scenes facts of this casting is that Hershey and Andrews were in a relationship for a dozen years, only breaking up in 2010 after Andrews fathered a child with another woman. Well, isn't that special. Surely, they'll have a lot of catching up to do.

John Lithgow White Rabbit oncewonderland.blogspot.com
John Lithgow plays the White Rabbit

The Caterpillar will appear in the premiere, and we also learn about the White Rabbit’s (John Lithgow) backstory throughout the season. It isn't intended to be historically accurate, but rather a stylized version of the historical period. “It’s not historical Victorian England; it’s fictional Victorian England,” Adam stated, which allow the writers to get creative. Season 1 will be split into two parts, with the first 13 episodes airing before reality show "The Quest" debuts on January 2. The remaining shows will air after that.

ABC Picks Up "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland"

"Once Upon a Time in Wonderland" Bought by ABC

Sophie Lowe Wonderland oncewonderland.blogspot.com
Sophie Lowe as Alice

EW.com is reporting that "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland" - apparently the final title of the show - has been picked up by ABC for the fall schedule. It will air as the lead-in to "Grey's Anatomy" on Thursday nights at 8 p.m., a prime slot, but one with which ABC has had a lot of trouble.

The first episode will take place in Storybrooke, but other than that, not a lot has been disclosed. ABC picked up the show based on 19 minutes worth of footage, all that has been shot since filming began on April 7, 2013 that could make up a coherent sequence for ABC executives. Clearly, ABC is going on the reputation of the show and its creators rather than a polished presentation, making this very unusual for network television.

First Promo Trailer

Filming Began on April 7, 2013

Sophie Lowe Alice oncewonderland.blogspot.com
Sophie Lowe stars as Alice

Preview for the upcoming (hopefully) series from the creators of "Once Upon A Time." Sophie Lowe stars as Alice. Amazingly, they got this polished trailer out in about a month, since filming only began on April 7 2013. I'm sure they would say, "Oh, that's nothing," but only modern technology and a lot of skill enables something like that.

Series Creators Comment on Spinoff

"We Can't Imagine Cora Not Appearing"

Sophie Lowe oncewonderland.blogspot.com
Sophie Lowe stars as Alice

Describing how Once: Wonderland syncs up with Once Upon a Time proper, series co-creator Ed Kitsis says:
"You will see [Wonderland] both post- and pre-curse. It will be very similar to Once in that there will be flashbacks of these new characters that take us to pre-curse Wonderland.”

Before Regina enacted the Dark Curse that overshadows events in "Once Upon a Time," Wonderland was presided over by the Evil Queen’s more evil queen, Cora. According to co-creator Adam Horowitz:

“We can’t imagine visiting that time in Wonderland and not seeing Cora as the Queen of Hearts.”

Paul Reubens and Emma Rigby Join Cast

Pee-wee Comes to Wonderland

Paul Reubens

Paul Reubens, best known to audiences as Pee-wee Herman from the kid's show of the 1980s, joins the spinoff cast in the role of the White Rabbit.

Paul Reubens as Pee Wee Herman oncewonderland.blogspot.com
Paul Reubens as Pee Wee Herman

Ralph Hemecker, who has done quite a number of "Once Upon a Time" episodes, will direct the spinoff pilot. The White Rabbit will be computer-generated, so Reubens himself won't actually appear on screen (at least very often).

Emma Rigby oncewonderland.blogspot.com
Emma Rigby

Emma Rigby also has been cast to appear in the spinoff as the Red Queen. Her casting continues the decidedly non-US makeup of the cast, with all three leads foreign-born. She is known in England for appearing in a string of television series there, most notably in "Hollyoaks" as Hannah Ashworth. The spinoff pilot films in Vancouver this week, immediately after the wrap of the regular season filming there of "Once Upon a Time."

Welcome!

"Once: Neverland" Stars Sophie Lowe as Alice

Sophie Lowe oncewonderland.blogspot.com
Sophie Lowe stars as Alice

Thanks for visiting! This blog will be devoted to news and commentary about the ABC Television Network's planned spinoff from its hit "Once Upon a Time" of a new show called "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland." As I write this, little is known about the show beyond its stars and general plot, which revolves around Alice's adventures in a strange world she knows as Wonderland.

Peter Gadiot oncewonderland.blogspot.com
Peter Gadiot also stars

Currently, we don't know yet if there even will be a series. All we know is that a pilot has been prepared and is scheduled to start shooting on April 7, 2013. It is being prepared by the same team that created "Once Upon a Time," so it likely will have similar themes and tone.

Peter Gadiot Cyrus Wonderland oncewonderland.filminspector.com
Peter Gadiot as Cyrus

If ABC (which undoubtedly has first crack at it) or another network likes the pilot and buys it, "Once: Wonderland" will become a series. Otherwise, "Once: Wonderlandand" will become nothing but a footnote to "Once Upon a Time" and quickly forgotten.

Michael Socha oncewonderland.blogspot.com
Michael Socha has been cast in "Once: Neverland"

There were rumors swirling about that the series would focus on the Lewis Carroll character of The Mad Hatter. However, those rumors turned out to be incorrect. There has been no official word from ABC sources that The Mad Hatter will figure into the series at all. Sebastian Stan played The Mad Hatter on "Once Upon a Time," but he is involved in other projects. Michael Socha plays The Knave,

Michael Socha the Knave oncewonderland.filminspector.com
Those mushrooms look tasty

ABC has been adamant that they will not recast the role of The Mad Hatter, so perhaps Sebastian Stan will show up now and then when he is available. If he isn't free or interested in appearing, the only conclusion we currently can draw is that The Mad Hatter will not appear on the new show.

Barbara Hershey oncewoderland.blogspot.com
Barbara Hershey would be a popular addition to the show

Another, more current rumor is that Barbara Hershey will reprise her role from "Once Upon a Time" of the Queen of Hearts ("Cora" in the "Once Upon a Time" real world). There is nothing official on that, either, but Hershey is not currently listed as having many future projects lined up, so perhaps she will be available, if asked to appear.
